Hey Guys,
I'm now pretty freed up after the usual HS finals scramble and so I should definitely be posting much more often. 🙂 Considering that, I decided to start my come back with getting some of the most heartbreaking news off my chest.
I may or may not have mentioned it on the blog yet, but I actually moved last October, and in the midst of all the hecticness and distraction of said move, my collection took quite a hit. Many of my isopods and other more fragile arthropods took the brunt end of things and were by far effected worst.
Below is a list of some notable species that I very unfortunately lost slightly before, during, or slightly after the move. 😞
Porcellio scaber "Orange"
Haplophthalmus danicus
Orchesella villosa
Orchesella cincta
Armadilllidium maculatum
Trachelipus rathkii
Porcellio laevis
Cylisticus convexus
Armadillidium nasatum
Porcellio spinicornis
Polyphaga aegyptiaca
Eupolyphaga sinensis "White Eye"
Acladocricus sp.
Adroniscus dentiger
Nearly all of these losses were the result of desiccation with exceptions of the E.sinensis "White Eye" and Acladocricus sp. which perished from fungal infections (and in the millipedes' case, possibly over-handling), the P.spinicornis which I let get too dry and then accidently over-moistened, and the P.aegyptiaca and C.convexus whose causes of death I'm still not exactly sure about. I must admit that in the cases of the E.sinensis "White Eye", Acladocricus sp., and P.spinicornis, I just made honest mistakes not so much connected to the move, but I figured I'd included them anyway since they were some pretty important species in my collection and did die off somewhat within the timeframe of the others.
Of course I hate to lose colonies of any of my inverts, let alone over a dozen of them, but I am fortunate that none were incredibly rare and I should eventually be able to re-acquire every single one of them. 🙂
As I mentioned earlier, some more new posts will surely be popping up on here soon, so check back often! I hope you all enjoyed and until next time, goodbye! 🙂
Sorry to hear that, moving is never fun, and it can take a hit on collections for sure. 😢 Hopefully you'll able to reacquire most of those species sometime this year!
ReplyDelete(Psst, you should update your Currently Kept Arthropods list!)
Yea, now I know how Kyle feels. lol Thanks! Luckily, all that's needed is to take a trip to a local woods to re-acquire the springtails, H.danicus, T.rathkii, and possibly P.spinicornis and C.convexus so there isn't really even much I'd have to buy back. :)
DeleteI've taken off the species that I no longer have, but there's no way I'm ruining the surprise of all the new species! :p
Yeah, I remember just moving with my small post-2015 collection was a hassle, now if I move it's gonna be WAY more stressful...
DeleteGlad most of the species you lost can be re-caught, makes it much easier to re-acquire all that you lost! :)
Aww, come on, not even a sneak peek? XP
Nah man, you're never gonna move, I think you jinx yourself like a year every time you say so. :p
DeleteYES, the only thing I'm kind of regretting now is that I built up the collection that much with sensitive things before moving. lol
You know, my RF signature has contained all the new roach species I've gotten for like over a month now. :p
Good to see your blog back!
ReplyDeleteI remember that time my Cotinis narrowly escaped with its life after I was informed of an unexpected long winter trip. Some pretty ridiculous efforts were needed to ensure its safety/comfort. Phew!
Best of luck to your remaining inverts
Thanks, it's awesome to be back up and able to post regularly again! :D
DeleteGlad it was able to make it through your absence! :) I'm certain the heat was what did in 90% of the species I lost, pretty much desiccated/overheated everything before I could even do anything about it. :(
Thank you, everything is stable now and doing pretty swell. :)
